Multiple Personality Robot
I've often been asked what I think about technology. Many have come to me asking this question as their children are growing up with computers and technology. It seems that in today's world everyone is scrambling for the newest and best technology. Many ask what I think about technology. How can technology be used to our advantage or disadvantage?
Technological advances aren't always good. There are many who argue that the invention of such technological equipment can actually hurt society by removing the empathy and creativity which we once had as individuals. Nowadays it is extremely hard to find someone who does not own at least some form of technology. Technology has become so pervasive that it is impossible to imagine living in an independent nation without any form of technological equipment. In fact, it has become almost impossible to live without any form of technological equipment.
On the Internet, individuals literally design their lives out of existent virtual worlds that they play out in front of a computer. Even in non-technological countries such as the United Kingdom and the United States individuals can live entirely in digital worlds, using almost any type of technological equipment they desire. In the future there will likely be even more technological equipment available. We will create virtual hackers, artificial intelligence, and completely automated systems which will need technology to function.
However, technology is also very useful. It can be used to help other human beings. Consider if you will the development of wearable computer technology. Imagine if scientists were able to create robotic android humans which could communicate with one another. These robotic humans would have the ability to live inside of one another and experience emotions not known to man.
Imagine for a moment that you are able to wirelessly connect yourself to one of these robots. By using the data you have collected from your robot you can send it into the brain of the robot to relay data on emotions, likes and dislikes. The connection you make will be entirely human. One day scientists will be able to wirelessly control a whole hierarchy of robotic computers. Think of this technology as providing a link, a spine, and a life-support system for robotic androids, thus enabling them to function beyond the purposes of a machine.
But of course, as we develop artificially intelligent computers that can think, learn, reason, and feel human emotions we also want to advance the same technologies to the point where they can empathize with people. And when a robotic android is able to do all three things at once that may be when we see the next step forward in technology. Human beings might not want to live forever. But if the technology available now allows someone to connect with a robotic android and give it all the emotions that a person would want to give then maybe we might get a better tomorrow. If we can start connecting machines to people, then maybe we can have the next phase of technology when the machines are so advanced that they can have multiple personalities.
There is a lot of talk about Artificial Intelligence or computer software programs which have the potential to become smart enough to compete with their creators at a chess game. If we can create robots that can beat the grandmasters at chess then wouldn't that be great? Or if we can create a robotic assistant that can surf the web, send emails, publish pictures and do all sorts of other human purposes than isn't it exciting to think that you might be able to have a robot with multiple personalities. When you have a robotic assistant that thinks, feels, acts and reasons like a real person that's pretty interesting. When you can have a robot that is a friend, a lover, a teacher, a father and a friend all at the same time it gets complicated, but it is definitely possible.
Is the future of technology going to allow robots with multiple personalities? It certainly seems possible and it does open up new doors for us as humankind. Just imagine what we would be able to accomplish as a society when we were not just fighting wars, but we were actually creating technology which was designed to help us live better lives. It is exciting to think about the future and it is a very exciting time to be living in the twenty-first century.
