The Effects of Technology on Teenagers
Technology has affected the way kids learn throughout their lives. In the past, most kids didn't even have computers in their homes. Today, the computer is almost a necessity, not a luxury. It can reduce the time children spend at primary school, boost the number of hours they spend at secondary school, and raise the number of hours they spend in college.
But it does not always only affect children. Adults also use technology at high levels. This may be because adults are more technologically savvy or simply because of their occupation. Just as kids who use technology at primary school have lower IQs than those who don't, adults employed in office positions have higher IQs than those who stay at home. As employers become aware of the importance of technology in the workplace, the number of adults working in offices with computers will rise.
Adults who are overused to technology may suffer adverse health effects. The two most common effects of overuse are anxiety and depression. Stress caused by the workload of carrying out technology-intensive tasks is a significant cause of stress. Other adverse health effects include increased stress levels, a decreased ability to work productively, and reduced productivity.
People who sit at a desk all day may risk developing coronary artery disease (CAD). Sitting at a desk for hours can lead to the onset of carpal tunnel syndrome and/or osteoporosis. Sitting at a computer desk for hours can also lead to strained back muscles and neck. Research has shown that sitting at a computer desk without proper posture and using ergonomic computer equipment like the chair may help decrease these health effects. A study conducted in the spring of 2021 by scientists in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine found that using various office equipment (laptop, desktop, etc.) provided better postural stability than simply using a chair with no added lumbar support.
Another group suffering from adverse effects of technology is teens and young adults. Many adolescents are deeply immersed in social media sites such as Facebook and MySpace. These young people spend an inordinate amount of time "tagging" or commenting on photos posted by friends. Sometimes this "self-promotion" leads to inappropriate communication regarding one's sex, a person's religion, or other sensitive issues. In addition, some teens have been known to create fake MySpace profiles to meet new friends or advertise online.
Adults may also be at risk for adverse effects of technology if they are not up to date on the latest technology news and advancements. There are many reasons that an individual would want to stay informed about technology. From the advances of computers and their ability to perform more tasks than before to social media use and its effect on relationships, there are many reasons to educate oneself on the newest innovations. While it is essential to keep up with technology in general, it is even more critical to ensure that the technology being used and shared is safe for everyone to use.
One of the most obvious adverse effects of technology use is the invasion of privacy when information is left behind on a laptop or other electronic device. Because of this, it is vital to make sure that important data such as financial statements, photos, or additional personal information is stored in a safe location. Additionally, keeping a digital diary can be a great way to keep track of personal lives without everyone finding out. Using a password or sharing a secure account with others can help individuals ensure that their privacy is protected while on the Internet.
Adverse effects of technology can range from a relatively harmless distraction to a significant problem that can impact social relationships, careers, and happiness in the future. For this reason, parents need to teach their teenagers how to overuse technology. If parents can adequately educate their children, the teenage years can be a happy time to get started. Although teenagers may be tempted to use various forms of technology, the ramifications can be far-reaching and difficult to recover from, mainly if it is not dealt with maturely and responsibly.
