The Dangers of Cyberbullying and Technology Addiction for Teens
Technology is often defined as how we transfer information over the Internet. Different technology enables data transfer across various mediums, including optical, magnetic, radio, and wireless. The three basic categories of technology are computer networks, hardware, and information technology, respectively.
In recent years, a new category of technology has developed that can potentially change the way we do business and communicate with each other. One of the most exciting forms of technology is electronic media or the Internet. Many companies invest in Internet infrastructure to support new technologies such as video streaming, high-speed Internet access, voice and video conferencing, video surveillance, remote access, e-mail, Internet telephony, and more. Michael Bess, CEO of Openwave, says, "New technologies have the potential to impact virtually every area of human activity. The pace of innovation at technology companies is accelerating, and many more industries will experience significant changes as technologies become more accessible and inexpensive."
Teenagers are changing the way they socialize. For example, one of the most popular social media sites, Twitter, was started just two years ago. Since its launch, millions have used it to communicate with friends, classmates, coworkers, family, and friends. One of the tops uses for Twitter right now is to find out where your friends are. In fact, according to figures from ComScore, almost 50% of all Internet traffic is driven by teens and young adults using social media to connect with others.
Another example of technological change today is artificial intelligence. If you Google the term" Artificial Intelligence," you'll find literally dozens of articles written on this topic. In fact, there is such a wide variety of ideas about artificial intelligence and its applications that it's hard to point to one. Experts range from computer programmers to futurists to those who are employed in the military.
One of the trends I see with new technologies is an emphasis on personalization. Take coupons for Target or Whole Foods with you as you shop. These are both examples of technological change today. Think of the new technologies being applied in stores such as these as being highly personalized. Perhaps one day, Target will offer coupons for things like "champagne" or "iced tea" as part of a promotion.
Addiction is also a topic of increasing interest. A lot of current technology can help people avoid dealing with addictions. Consider the advances in addiction treatment like Alcoholics Anonymous and other meetings. People no longer have to deal with the emotional, physical, or psychological trauma of alcohol abuse. The anonymity of technology makes meetings more open, which can make them more effective. Electronic devices like audiobook readers can give individuals a way to stay connected when trying to quit.
While we often think of addiction as something that only happens to people in the extreme, technology is helping those with addiction overcome their issues. For example, those who struggle with depression may find the technology helpful to talk with others. Electronic devices like iPods and mp3 players make it easy to stay connected and share personal and spiritual information with fellow sufferers.
In my opinion, technology is making our lives easier, but like most things in life, it's only making life better. Some of the personal applications of the technology are already being used in everyday lives. Consider what we can accomplish with the new technologies in our lives.
First of all, it is safe to assume that future generations will have super-intelligent computers, much like human beings. They will be able to think, reason, and interact in many ways, just like us. Super-intelligent computers will allow people to live richer and fuller lives. They will build, purchase, and own houses, cars, and even luxury items like the luxury New York skyscraper and socialize with other people worldwide.
Also, one emerging application of technology is technology addiction. Many teenagers today have become deeply addicted to social media. Social media allows teenagers to connect with people worldwide and authentically express themselves. It allows for peer pressure to be far greater than if teenagers were to form groups in person. Unfortunately, some teenagers use social media to get "hot" with someone, and before they know it, they have lost contact with the friend they thought they had at the end of the day.
In conclusion, technology has caused many problems for teenagers, but those problems can be solved. The first solution is to stop using computers and turn off the Internet. Secondly, teenagers need to learn how to be well-informed citizens. Teach your children not to share personal information online. Lastly, teach your teenagers how to defend themselves against cyberbullying, as it is hazardous and can lead to severe consequences if they are not dealt with appropriately.
